Warm the Sole Sock Drive
November 1, 2015 @ 10:00 am - November 30, 2015 @ 5:00 pm
The BSM is excited to kick off the “Warm the Sole Sock Drive” on November 1st – our annual fundraiser which collects socks for the Scott Mission. Socks are one of the first items people request when asking for assistance and are a staple of basic care for the homeless.
As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, this year’s Warm the Sole will be bigger and better than ever! For the whole month of November, visitors to the BSM are encouraged to bring a new pair of unworn socks for distribution to those in need. If you make a donation on a Saturday or Sunday during the drive you can visit the BSM for FREE that day. There will also be arts and crafts available for kids, drop-in until 4pm on weekends.
The BSM’s goal for this year’s drive is to provide enough socks to last the Scott Mission throughout the winter months. Did you know that socks are the most needed and least donated item of clothing? Help us to give the gift of warmth to our community! The BSM would like to thank community partner McGregor, who have generously donated over 2000 socks to the drive!
This year we are very excited to once again have a young group of artists joining us to create an art installation inspired by Warm the Sole. Sponsored by McGregor, this year’s installation is titled Stockings, created by Nicholas Reddon, Stephan van Eeden, and Erik Skouris. Stockings purpose is to bring awareness to an item that is utilitarian and often disposable. The work is a commentary on the nature of the disposability of clothing in our present era of consumption. This tendency to dispose however, is countered with the fact that all socks used in the installation will be charitably donated rather than thrown away when the installation is finished. Stockings will be on view in our Footprints studio for the duration of Warm the Sole.
