The Phillip Nutt Award for Canadian Shoe Design Excellence

Sonja Bata and The Bata Shoe Museum Foundation have established a fund in the name of Phillip Nutt for young Canadian shoe designers. Phillip’s passion for excellence in shoe design and innovative thinking will continue through this award.

Phillip was a longtime adviser, donor and supporter of the Bata Shoe Museum, and a lifelong contributor to the footwear design and manufacturing industry.

The Foundation is honoured to establish this fund to encourage those who share his commitment and vision.   Your gift to the fund will pay tribute to Phillip’s life, his passion for investing in new shoe design talent, and his wish to help mentor and encourage Canadian youth pursue their talents.

You can help support the fund by making an online donation below (by credit card through PayPal) or by cheque (made out to the Bata Shoe Museum Foundation, 327 Bloor Street West, Toronto, Ontario, M5S1w7). If you would like to speak to someone about the fund, or discuss other ways of donating, please contact the museum at 416-979-7799 x 239.

A message from the Nutt family:

On Tuesday, January 2nd, Phillip Nutt passed away peacefully, although unexpectedly, due to heart complications.

We are all deeply saddened and mourn losing him. He loved his family dearly and we miss him.

It was Phillip’s wish that a design shoe scholarship be created in his name for young Canadian shoe designers.   We would like to sincerely thank Sonja Bata and The Bata Shoe Museum Foundation for honouring Phillip, and for making this possible.

Phillip (or “P-Nutt” to most who knew him) had so many friends and colleagues who appreciated his talent, his generosity and his character. He was so proud of his contribution to the shoe industry over the past five decades.

Phillip Nutt is survived by Joan, his loving wife of fifty years, his daughters Samantha and Pippa, his adoring grandson Rhys, and his two sons-in-law,  The Honourable Dr. Eric Hoskins and Sean Kenalty.

We know you share our loss and it gives us comfort knowing that he was loved and respected by so many.

In sorrow, the Nutt family.
