The Bata Shoe Museum is proud to be the host venue for “The Shoe Project”. Founded by Canadian author Katherine Govier, “The Shoe Project” began in 2011 when Govier, BSM Senior Curator Elizabeth Semmelhack and an anonymous donor came together to create a space for women who have immigrated to Canada to tell their stories using shoes as a focal point of their journeys.
The BSM now acts as the host venue for a changing group of women under the leadership of Govier as an ongoing writing workshop for women who are new to Canada. It is now in its fourth year. Members meet for eight weeks in spring and fall and exchange stories of arrival, and write about the role shoes play in old and new lives.
